Reading Prompt #3

Egbert Ch. 3 provides various websites to use in helping our ELLs improve their practices with learning, speaking and acquiring their L2. One recommended website is www.elfs.com. This website allows for students to hear audio of various forms of English sentence structures. It also provides opportunities to improve reading fluency and allows for the students to create their own stories (with some limitations).

Computers can be very useful for ELLs in a classroom but the teacher must always include authentic lessons, with the L2, in order to ensure the students are learning at a pace that is comfortable to them and within their individual abilities.

Hola, Lisa.
You make a such a good point that that computers ought to be a supplementary feature to authentic, live instruction. I love what we are learning in this class, and I am excited about all of the applications we can take into the classroom right away. Of course, interacting with real, live humans (teachers and other students) who listen, respond, and drive the conversation or lesson or thought process in different (but usually related) directions is such great practice in communicating and negotiating meaning. Using a number of the many resources that are out there and available to us should enrich our lessons and enhance the learning experience for our ELLs. I do believe the variety of resources, when planned carefully and used efficiently, will really help stimulate our learners' minds. Your blog looks nice, and I love the little animated clip art stuff.

That is true. The teacher needs to be able to provide meaningful activities for the students. I looked over the website that you listed, and it looks pretty good. I wish they had it in Spanish too. I'm looking for a wesite like this, so that my students create their own stories in Spanish. They get discouraged when they have to do freewriting in Spanish. In my experience, it is very helpful to lead the students to a step by step activity when using the computer. -Rosario
